Reintroducing Retinol This Autumn: A Beginner's Guide

28 September 2026 1 min read

Autumn is the best time of year to start, or restart, a retinol routine. UV intensity is lower than in summer, skin isn't actively sun-stressed, and the increased sun sensitivity retinol causes is far easier to manage.

“Start slow” is the most common advice about retinol, and also the most commonly ignored. Here's an actual beginner's protocol, not just the warning.

Why autumn, specifically

A lower UV index means less risk from the sun sensitivity retinol brings, and skin isn't recovering from active summer sun damage the way it might be in July or August. Cooler weather and more time spent indoors also make it easier to manage any flaking without it interfering with makeup or daily life, and starting now sets skin up before winter dryness arrives.

Start lower and slower than you think

Retinol+ Emulsion 0.3 is formulated as an entry-level strength, which makes it a sensible place to begin. If you're new to retinol altogether, try the 2g sample size first to test tolerance before committing to full size. Two to three nights a week is enough to start, always at night, always followed by a moisturiser, never layered under sunscreen.

Protect against the two real risks

The two things that actually derail a retinol routine are irritation and sun sensitivity, not the ingredient itself. Pro-Heal Serum Advance+ underneath or on off-nights helps calm any reactivity while skin adjusts. And Extreme Protect SPF 40 every single morning isn't optional while using retinol, even on overcast autumn days, skip it and you undo most of the benefit.

Consistency beats intensity

Results from retinol show up over eight to twelve weeks of gentle, consistent use — not from pushing strength or frequency too quickly. Easing in properly this autumn means skin is in a good place well before the festive season.
