Menopause Skin Tips

As we age, our cellular turnover starts to slow down.

As us women become more seasoned in life, we can consider that we are ‘blessed’ when changes happen. These changes are mainly due to fluctuations of hormones in our system, wreaking havoc within our skin, hair and nails, to name a few.

In this blog, I would like to address some helpful hints and tips that I have come across, in my career as a skin specialist.

Hydration is one of the most important factors that needs to be managed when going through the various stages of menopause. Products containing hyaluronic acid are especially recommended. Hyaluronic Acid has the impressive capacity to absorb and attract 1,800 times its weight in water.

This powerful humectant will make sure the skin stays moisturised and feeling very comfortable. The Hydra-Cool Serum® from iS CLINICAL is a lightweight gel serum that contains the purest form of low molecular Hyaluronic Acid (HA), which allows it to be absorbed deeper within the skin, ensuring a deep and lasting hydration.

This moisture emulsion is a hydrating, reparative and replenishing moisturising treatment. It contains the Extremozyme® technology that helps to correct DNA damage and prevent further damage. It will be exceptionally beneficial for skin that has been dry for a long time, leaving the barrier functioning compromised. It can be used morning, and/or evening - and is excellent when used before the application of a foundation as a primer, creating a beautiful dewy finish to the complexion.

The Youth Intensive Crème® is a 3-in-one treatment. It provides 24 hours of hydration. It is a powerful antioxidant and is exceptionally calming to the skin. The Crème provides instant results, helping to smooth out fine lines and assist in rebuilding cellular integrity, thus helping to firm the skin. It also pairs well with any aesthetic treatments to maintain successful clinical outcomes.

As we age, our cellular turnover starts to slow down. This can create a build-up of dead skin cells that can eventually cause the skin to break out. A common complaint I would often hear, which can be very frustrating for anyone is, “I thought I left blemishes behind in my teenage years”.

If we could all take a page out of my grandmother’s book; she has always had a positive outlook and would describe getting the occasional breakout as a ‘sign of life’. She would get excited when she had the odd spot! She was embracing time and changes in life (although I am not certain how happy she would be if it had been a regular occurrence).

This build-up of dead skin also creates quite a dull complexion for two reasons. As cells move up the layers of skin, they become dehydrated and flattened before they fall off. These skin cells are unable to reflect and refract the light adequately.

The third go-to cream in the iS CLINICAL canon for menopause skin treatment is Active Serum®. This has a combination of Alpha and Beta hydroxy acids that are fantastic to gently resurface the skin. These acids work synergistically together to exfoliate the skin simultaneously from the top down and from with the pore up, allowing the active ingredients from your skin care wardrobe to penetrate fully.

These are just some of the little tips and tricks I’ve learned in my thirteen years as an aesthetician - and hopefully they can be of some benefit to you, or a loved one.
