Eczema Awareness Month

Introduction: What is Eczema?
Eczema
Eczema is an inflammatory skin condition. It can present itself as itchy, dry, sore skin that can often crack and weep. People can experience eczema at different times throughout their life whether it is an infant through to adulthood, an infant with it clearing as they mature or triggered in adulthood. It is usually a long-term condition that has bouts of appearing ‘well managed’ and ‘flare ups’. A flare up can be out lined as experiencing one or more symptoms at one given time and last between days, weeks and months.

Indicators of Eczema

  • Small – Large patches of dry skin
  • Itchy Skin
  • Dry Skin
  • Cracked and Sore
  • Red and Inflamed Skin
  • Commonly found in the creases of the skin e.g., elbows, knees.

Causes of Eczema
The exact cause of eczema is unknown; however, it is usually a result of an overactive immune system. Common triggers can include environmental, tropical and dietary allergies. It can also be hereditary and develop alongside other conditions like asthma and hay fever.

Different types of Eczema
There are six types of eczema that each present differently.

  • Atopic Eczema - Traditional eczema
  • Discoid Eczema - Occurs in circular or oval patches.
  • Contact Dermatitis - Type of eczema that occurs when the body comes into contact with a substance it is sensitive to
  • Varicose Eczema - Most often affects the lower legs and is caused by problems with blood flow through the veins.
  • Seborrheic Eczema - Most often determined by red scaly patches that develop on the sides of the nose, eyebrows, ears and scalp.
  • Dyshidrotic Eczema (Pompholyx) - Causes tiny blisters to form and erupt across the palms of the hands and/or feet.

How can we treat Eczema?
In some cases, healthcare providers may offer emollients, antihistamines and in worse cases topical steroid creams. But how can we as individuals help to take care of our skin at home?
